Urban social geography

Within this field of research, special attention has been afforded to social conditions in large urban areas, with particular interest focused on situations characterised by low levels of life quality. Social geography is the branch of human geography that is most closely related to social theory in general and sociology in particular, dealing with the relation of social phenomena and its spatial components. Though the term itself has a tradition of more than 100 years, there is no consensus on its explicit content. In 1968, Anne Buttimer noted that "ith some notable exceptions, social geography can be considered a field created and cultivated by a number of individual scholars Urban geography is currently experiencing a period of theoretical pluralism and epistemological debate. It is suggested that this pluralism and sensitivity to social theory should be encouraged. Examining urban social geography from a theoretical and historical perspective, it also explores how it has developed into the modern day.
